Things to Do in Amador County with Kids — A Local's Guide
Caverns, gold mines, splash pads, trains, ranches, and the best parks. Here's what families actually do with kids in Amador County.

Kid-friendly Amador, by what kids actually like
Amador County is a great place to raise kids. It's also a place where you have to know where things are — there's no city-grid of obvious destinations. Here's the list I share with families considering the area.
The headliners
Black Chasm Cavern (Volcano)
A walking tour of a limestone cavern with rare helictite crystals. Around 50 minutes, age-appropriate for 4+. Cool year-round (literally — bring a sweatshirt). Run by the Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation.
Sutter Gold Mine (between Sutter Creek and Amador City)
Underground mine tour on a tram. Kids love the helmets and the dark. Also offers gemstone panning, which is a hit for ages 5–10.
Kennedy Mine (Jackson)
Surface tour of one of the deepest gold mines in the world. Above-ground exhibits, the famous tailing wheels, and weekend volunteers who actually know the history. Good for older kids (8+) interested in how things work.
Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park (Pine Grove)
A massive limestone outcropping with 1,100+ mortar holes ground by the Northern Sierra Miwok over generations. Reconstructed roundhouse, regalia museum, walking trails. Free entry days throughout the year. One of the more meaningful local field trips.
Outdoor and active
Lake Amador
Reservoir with swimming, fishing, paddleboarding, and seasonal cabin rentals. Catfish and bass fishing is legitimately good. Day-use fees modest.
Howard Park (Ione)
Splash pad, large playground, picnic areas, baseball fields. The default summer afternoon for Ione families.
Detert Park (Jackson)
Skate park, playground, basketball courts, large grass field. Good winter rainy-day-recovery park.
Minnie Provis Park (Sutter Creek)
Smaller but well-kept. Walking distance from Main Street if you're combining errands with kid time.
Seasonal must-dos
Daffodil Hill (March-April)
Private property near Volcano open for a few weeks each spring when 300,000+ daffodils bloom. Reopened after a closure — confirm dates each year.
Kirkwood snow play (winter)
You don't need a ski day pass to play in snow. Carson Pass area has plenty of pullouts for sledding and snow play. The actual resort has dedicated snow play areas as well.
Amador County Fair (late July)
Plymouth fairgrounds. Carnival rides, 4-H animals, demolition derby, concerts, fair food. Five days, end of July. The single biggest annual event for kids in the county.
Apple Hill day trip (October)
Technically Camino in El Dorado County, 35 minutes from Plymouth. Apple picking, pumpkin patches, pie. Weekend traffic is brutal — go weekday if you can.
The educational picks
Amador County Museum (Jackson)
Small but worthwhile. Gold Rush artifacts, working mine model. Best for older kids.
Volcano observatory (Volcano)
Public stargazing nights — dark skies make for genuinely great viewing. Schedule varies.
Preston Castle (Ione)
Historic reform school turned tour destination. Halloween events are popular but the regular tours are also worthwhile. Older kids/teens.
Indoor backups for hot or smoky days
- Sutter Creek and Jackson public libraries — small but active children's programming
- Jackson Rancheria Casino's family-side restaurants (the Mandela Buffet is kid-friendly when open)
- Movie theater in Jackson (Foothill Cinemas)
- Drive to Stockton or Roseville for indoor options — about 75 minutes either direction
What's missing
Be honest with yourself: there's no children's museum, no aquarium, no large-scale indoor entertainment center. The kids who thrive here grow up loving the outdoors. Kids who need constant stimulation are happier in Roseville or Folsom.
