Hiking & Outdoor Recreation in Amador County

From easy oak-woodland walks to high-Sierra alpine trails, here's where to hike, mountain bike, paddle, and fish in Amador County.

By Neeta Patel ·

Why Amador outperforms its size on outdoor access

Amador covers everything from 200-foot oak savanna near Ione to 9,000-foot Sierra crest near Kirkwood. Within a one-hour drive of Jackson you can be in five different ecosystems. Here's where to go in each.

Foothill hikes (year-round)

Howard Ranch Trail (Ione)

2.5 miles of rolling oak grassland on Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps-managed land. Wildflowers spectacular in March–April. Fine for kids and dogs.

Cosumnes River Preserve (just west of Amador, Galt)

Boardwalk trails through wetlands and oak woodland. Birding heaven — sandhill cranes wintering by the thousands November–February.

Black Chasm and surrounding area (Volcano)

Light walking near the caverns with mature forest. Combines well with the cavern tour.

Mid-elevation hikes (spring–fall)

Indian Grinding Rock SHP trails (Pine Grove)

Easy loops through oak and pine. The cultural sites are the draw, but the trails are real.

Lake Tabeaud (north of Pine Grove)

Small lake with a forested loop trail. Quiet, locals know it, tourists rarely find it. Great paddleboard or kayak destination.

Pardee Reservoir trails (south Amador)

Lake-edge walking, fishing access, and seasonal wildflowers.

Sierra hikes (summer)

Carson Pass area (Highway 88, near Kirkwood)

This is the marquee high-Sierra access for Amador residents. Trails worth knowing:

  • Winnemucca Lake — 5 miles round-trip, alpine lake under Round Top. The classic.
  • Round Top Lake and Fourth of July Lake — longer extension if you want a fuller day
  • Lake Margaret — easier 5-mile out-and-back, great for families
  • Frog Lake and Forestdell Falls — 4-mile loop, less crowded
  • Showers Lake via Schneider Camp — 6 miles, on the Pacific Crest Trail

Parking permits required at most Carson Pass trailheads.

Mokelumne Wilderness

The bigger backcountry behind Kirkwood. Multi-day trips into the heart of the Sierra. Bear canisters required.

Mountain biking

  • Bear River Reservoir area — singletrack and fire road, mixed skill levels
  • Sly Park (across the line in El Dorado) — well-built network, 30 min north
  • Kirkwood lift-served riding (summer) — newer downhill operation

Paddling and water

  • Bear River Reservoir — paddleboard, kayak, swim. Crowded summer weekends; weekday or shoulder season is the move.
  • Silver Lake (Highway 88) — boating, kayaking, fishing. Beautiful alpine setting.
  • Caples Lake — similar alpine character
  • Mokelumne River — class III–IV whitewater seasonal, fishing year-round
  • Pardee and Camanche Reservoirs — full-service boating, fishing, swimming

Fishing

Trout in the alpine lakes (Bear River, Silver, Caples, Kirkwood Lake), bass and catfish in the foothill reservoirs (Pardee, Amador, Camanche), striped bass in the lower Mokelumne. California fishing license required statewide.

Skiing and snow

  • Kirkwood Mountain Resort — alpine and Nordic. Best snow in the Tahoe region most seasons.
  • Carson Pass Nordic — groomed cross-country trails
  • Bear River backcountry skiing — for the experienced
  • Snowshoeing — anywhere along Highway 88 east of Pine Grove most winters

Hunting

Deer (general season fall), wild turkey (spring and fall), upland bird, waterfowl. Lots of private land; check regulations and access carefully.

Off-roading and OHV

El Dorado National Forest has extensive OHV trails. Rubicon and Barrett Lake trails are the marquee. Permits and rules vary.
