Annual Events in Amador County That Make It Feel Like Home

The county fair, Italian Picnic, Daffodil Hill, Dickens Christmas — here are the recurring events that turn newcomers into locals.

The events that anchor the year

One of the underrated things about a small county is that the calendar of recurring events functions as a kind of social glue. Show up at three or four of these in your first year and you'll know more neighbors than most people meet in a decade in a big city.

Spring

Daffodil Hill (March–April)

Private 4-acre property near Volcano where 300,000+ daffodils bloom every spring. Open for a few weeks when bloom peaks. Reopened after a multi-year closure. Confirm dates and access annually.

Sutter Creek Wine Stroll (typically May)

Main Street tasting event with Amador wineries pouring at downtown shops. Buy a glass and walk the historic district. Beloved local tradition.

Amador Four-Fires Wine Festival (May–June)

One-day showcase of Amador wineries at the Plymouth fairgrounds. Hundreds of wines, food, music. The single best introduction to local wine.

Summer

Italian Picnic and Parade (early June, Sutter Creek)

One of the oldest continuous Italian-American picnics in the country, running since the 1880s. Parade through Sutter Creek, picnic at the Italian Benevolent Society grounds in Sutter Hill. Bocce, music, food, kids running everywhere. The kind of event you don't quite believe until you experience it.

Amador County Fair (late July, Plymouth)

Five days at the Plymouth fairgrounds — 4-H livestock, carnival rides, demolition derby, destruction derby, concerts, fair food. The biggest single event on the county calendar.

Volcano Lions Club Fish Fry (June)

Quintessential small-town fundraiser. Catfish and chicken, picnic tables, neighbors.

Independence Day in Ione

Parade through downtown, family-friendly daytime events, fireworks at Howard Park.

Fall

Big Crush (October, Shenandoah Valley)

Three-day open-house weekend across all Amador wineries during harvest. Wineries open kitchens, host barrel tastings, run grape stomps, special pours. The deepest dive into wine country in a single weekend.

Jackson Boomtown Days (October)

Music, food, beer garden, family events in downtown Jackson. Costume parade for kids.

Halloween in Sutter Creek

Main Street trick-or-treating along the historic district. Shops decorate hard. Hundreds of kids.

Preston Castle Halloween tours (Ione, October)

Self-explanatory. Bring your nerve.

Winter

Sutter Creek Christmas (early December)

Main Street parade, tree lighting, carolers, hot cider. The lights stay up through the holidays.

Volcano Theatre Christmas show (December)

Long-running community theatre in the historic Volcano Theatre. Sells out — buy early.

Jackson Holiday Parade

Evening parade through downtown Jackson, families lining Main Street.

Kirkwood opening day (typically late November–early December)

Locals' season pass kickoff. Snow conditions vary year to year.

Ongoing community anchors

Sutter Creek Theatre concert series

Year-round acoustic and small-band touring acts in the restored historic theatre.

Amador Community Concert Band

Free outdoor concerts in Sutter Creek and Jackson summer evenings.

Weekly farmers markets

Saturday in Sutter Creek year-round; seasonal in Plymouth and Jackson.

How to use the calendar as a newcomer

If you're moving here, pick three events in your first six months — ideally one across each season. Show up. Talk to people. The casseroles-and-introductions phase of being a newcomer in a small county is short but real. After a year of farmers markets and Italian Picnic and Big Crush you'll have a community that knows your name.

Working with a local Amador County REALTOR

I plan close dates around big events when buyers want to land in time for them. Moving in the weekend before Big Crush is a special kind of welcome to the area. Reach out to plan your move, or browse current listings in the town that fits your social calendar.
