Relocating to Amador County: The Complete Guide
Everything a first-time mover needs to know about Amador County — towns compared, schools, internet, medical, commute, and what nobody mentions until you've already signed.

Amador County rewards people who relocate intentionally. It is rural by Bay Area standards, suburban by true mountain standards, and culturally closer to Sonoma’s foothill edges than to Tahoe. This guide is the orientation most newcomers wish they’d had six months earlier.

Schools
The Amador County Unified School District serves most of the county. Test scores and program depth vary materially by school site — not a single county-wide grade. Visit before you commit.
Internet
Don’t assume rural means slow. AT&T fiber has reached pockets of Jackson, Sutter Creek, and parts of Ione. Cable is widespread in the lower county. Above Pine Grove, plan on Starlink as primary or backup. We have a full remote-worker connectivity guide.
Medical
Sutter Amador Hospital is the primary acute-care facility. Specialty care often routes to Sacramento (about an hour). Pick a primary-care physician before move-in — wait lists exist.
Commute reality
Sacramento is 45–70 minutes depending on town and time of day. Bay Area is a two-to-three-hour commitment. Most successful Amador transplants are remote, hybrid (one or two days in office), or retired.
What nobody mentions
- Propane vs. PG&E gas. Above Pine Grove, you’re on propane. Budget for a tank.
- Fire insurance. Confirm bindability before you remove contingency. The FAIR Plan guide walks through it.
- Burn days. Air quality enforcement matters in the lower foothills.
- Wildlife. Deer, turkeys, the occasional bear. Plan your garden accordingly.
- Cell coverage. Pockets of zero signal exist. Test on the actual property.
